Dr. Hiroo Kanaï

I was born in Osaka, Japan, on August 5th, 1965. Around the age of nine, I developed an interest in veterinary medicine. In 1991, I graduated from Gifu University’s Department of Veterinary Medicine. In 1994, I established Kanai Veterinary Surgery as a general veterinary hospital in Himeji City (near Osaka). Throughout my career, I have taken several training courses in soft tissue, orthopaedic, minimally invasive, and endoscopic surgery. All of which were not just veterinary medicine but also human medicine-oriented.

I began conducting laparoscopic surgery in 2006, and in 2008, I reported the first case of laparoscopic canine cholecystectomy in Japan. In 2013, I co-founded a study group focusing on small animal minimally invasive surgery (SAMIT). My co-founders include a doctor who specialises in human digestive surgery and three veterinary colleagues. We have published research discussing standardising laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) and its endoscopic surgical microanatomy. In 2022, I received a PhD in veterinary medicine, specialising in endoscopic surgery, which includes LC and idiopathic chylothorax. In addition to practicing veterinary medicine at my clinic, which specialises in minimally invasive surgery, I am currently a visiting researcher at Osaka Metropolitan University, a member of the VES Abstract Committee, and a scientific advisor to Karl Storz Japan.

Now I reside in Himeji, a city known for its 17th-century architecture and having Japan’s largest castle. My wife, two cats, and a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel make up my family. I enjoy music, particularly classical music.
