Dr. Matthias Eberspächer-Schweda

Following graduation from the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna/Austria in 2005, Dr. Matthias Eberspächer-Schweda spent one-year in private practice, before commencing a one-year small animal rotating internship at the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna. After two-years as assistant at the Department of Small Animal Surgery he started to work together with Prof. Dr. Karl Zetner, Dipl. EVDC at the Dentistry and Oral Surgery Department at the University Hospital. After Prof.

Zetner’s retirement in 2010 he completed a 5-week externship at the Department of Dentistry and Oral Surgery, University of Pennsylvania, USA which happened again in 2012. In
2011 he passed an exam at the Austrian Chamber to become a Small Animal Specialist/FTA. In 2014 Dr. Eberspächer-Schweda published his thesis which was honored by the Austrian Society of Small Animal Practioneers as the best clinical paper.

He also attended many trainings in Dentistry and Oral Surgery such as ESAVS Dentistry 1-4, and AOVET Master Courses since he completed an AVDC full-time residency in 2019, became Diplomate of the American Veterinary Dental College (AVDC) in 2022, and Diplomate of the European Veterinary College (EVDC) in 2023. Together with the Austrian Veterinary Chamber (ÖTK), Dr. Matthias Eberspächer-Schweda established a curriculum for training as a specialist for dental and maxillofacial surgery (ÖTK Diploma), in whose first official examination he also participated and passed.

For many years, Dr. Eberspächer-Schweda was head of dental and oral surgery at the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna, radiation protection officer and in charge of laser protection. Since 2023, he has been working for one of the largest and most
2 modern veterinary clinics in Austria (Vetklinikum) and is entrusted with the establishment of one of the most advanced veterinary dental centers in Europe. His research interests include oro-maxillofacial surgery (trauma and oncologic surgery), maxillofacial reconstruction, laser surgery and imaging diagnostics using computed tomography, cone-beam CT and micro-CT in small animals and pets.

He is a founding member of the Austrian Society of Veterinary Dentistry (ÖGTZ), a member of the European Society of Dentistry (EVDS), a member of the American and European Veterinary Dental College (AVDC/EVDC) and is responsible for the diploma
examination for the Austrian Diploma in Dental and Maxillofacial Surgery (ÖTK). In addition to working with students, Dr. Eberspächer-Schweda is a welcome speaker at various national and international congresses. As a delegate of the Austrian Veterinary Chamber, it is particularly important to him to support postgraduate training.
